May 09 2012 RSVP

The May NodeDC meetup will be Wednesday, May 16 at 7:00 pm at Stetson’s Bar and Grill, near the intersection of 16th and U streets NW. This is a great opportunity to learn more about node.js, hear how people are using it, and get to know other local developers using and considering node.js.

Once everyone has drinks at 7:30 pm, we’ll do a round of introductions and then have several lightning talks. So far we have one on the lineup:

  • John Kelvie and Michael Myers of Atomizer Software will present the technical design of a game they are building with node.js, and request feedback.

  • David Rees will overview the key concepts and features of two of the newest Node.js web development frameworks - Derby. and Meteor. Both combine realtime data propagation with live HTML generation on both the client and the server.

April meetup

The April NodeDC meetup will be Wednesday, April 25 at 7:00 pm at Stetson’s Bar right at 16th and U Streets NW. Come out to meet node.js developers, see how people are using node and what they’re building, and share your own experiences with it. No node.js experience is needed - just come out ready to talk to people and ask questions.

At 7:30, we’ll have a round of introductions followed by several five minute lightning talks. So far, we have one on the lineup:

  • Aaron Silverman will talk about his experiences with free sandbox node.js hosting using nodester or nodejitsu for those looking to play around.

  • Dane Springmeyer will give an introduction to message passing in node.js, To scale programs across many cores and machines efficient message passing is critical. Dane will review the tools you have to work with in node, covering the ‘child_process’ module, the new ‘cluster’ module, and third-party add on’s like zeromq.node.

If you’d like to give a talk on something related to node - whether it’s code, a project, or an idea - send a message to @nodedc or through the meetup group and we’ll add you to the lineup.

March meetup

The March NodeDC meetup will be Monday, March 19 at 7:00 pm at Stetson’s right off 16th and U Streets NW. These meetups bring together people using and interested in node.js to talk, share what their working on, and get to know one another.

So far we have two talks on the lineup:

  • Tom MacWright will present on big data processing and visualization with node - solving the problem of analyzing road density data with redis, d3, sqlite, polymaps.

  • Kyle Hill will talk about visualizing Capital Bikeshare data as a scoreboard for fastest point-to-point trips using the Persevere API.

The meetup will start at 7:00 pm, with a round of introductions and talks kicking off at 7:30 pm. Everyone is welcome. Stetson’s is a bar - if you’re not 21, message us at @nodedc and we’ll try to get you in.

February meetup

This month we’re joining forces with the folks from DC jQuery for a joint meetup on Monday, February 20 starting at 7:00 pm. This month we’ll be at Fathom Creative at 1333 14th Street NW (at Rhode Island). We have three speakers on the lineup so far.

  • Jafar Amjad will present on making a Node.js multiplayer site, specifically one that uses a low amount of bandwidth per player and features lasers, gravity, and walk cycles via animated gif’s. Check out his early beta version for a preview.

  • Ryan Roemer will talk about async.js.

  • Dylan Greene will present HTML Canvas while giving a jaw-dropping DoodleOrDie demo.

The monthly NodeDC meetups bring together developers to talk about node.js and are a great opportunity to meet other developers, learn more about node, and see some examples of how people are using it. The January NodeDC meetup will be on Monday, January 16 at Stetson’s Bar and Grill at the intersection of 16th and U streets. December Meetup

The December NodeDC meetup will be on Wednesday, December 14 at 7:00 pm. We’ll kick things off at 7:30 pm with introductions, followed by five minute lightning talks on topics related to node.js. So far, we have these talks lined up:

  • Ian Ward will talk about how deploying node apps, covering components like SSL, Upstart, Nginx, logging, and monitoring - a two hour talk in five exciting minutes.
  • Will White will talk about node-inspector, a handy browser-based node debugging tool that allows you to set breakpoints, step though code, and even edit code while a process is running.
  • Ray Daly will talk about concept of TTD for APIs using node and hopes to get feedback from the group.

The meetup will be at the upstairs bar of Stetson’s, located right at 16th and U streets NW. Both the Dupont Circle metro stop on the red line and U street on the green line are about four blocks away, with 16th street buses all passing within a block of the bar.

The next Washington, DC Node.js meetup will be on Monday, November 14 at 7:00 pm. We’ll be in a different venue this time, taking over the upstairs bar at Stetson’s, near the intersection of 16th and U Streets NW. We’ll kick off the formal part of the meetup at 7:30 pm, starting with introductions and then diving into a series of five minute lightning talks on topics relating to node.js. October meetup

The third-ever Node.js meetup held in Washington, DC will be Wednesday, September 19. The meetup will start at 7:00 pm, with talks starting at 7:30 so everyone has a chance to grab a drink and talk to folks. Then we’ll have introductions, followed by 5 minute lightning talks on anything related to node. We’re looking for volunteers to present - if you’d like to give a talk, submit an idea on the lanyard event page or tweet it at @developmentseed. So far, we have these on the lineup:

  • Will White will talk about testing node.js web applications with expresso, an async testing framework.
  • Ryan Roemer will talk about Sunny.js, a multi-cloud datastore client for Node.js with read/write streams and async.js.

Everyone is welcome - including newcomers to node.js, those interested to hear what the hype is about, and experienced developers looking to trade tricks.

The meetup will be in Development Seed’s garage is at 1714 14th Street NW, off the alley behind 14th Street (behind Peregrine and Cork). Turn down R street and make the first turn down the alley - you’ll see our sign.

September meetup

Come on over to Development Seed’s garage to talk about Node.js and why you should be using it on Tuesday, September 20. The July meetup brought out a lot of node.js developers and interested people, and we’re hoping this one does the same.

We’ll have a few five minute lightning talks around topics relating to Node.js. We’re looking for a few more speakers. If you’d like to give one, please submit it here or send it to @developmentseed. So far, we have these lightning talks on the schedule.

Adrian Rossouw will give an intro to Underscore.js. He’ll run through some of the features of the most depended on package in npm. Underscore.js is quickly becoming a requirement for both server-side and client side developers, and its collection of small utility functions will help you work more efficiently with data structures. Underscore.js also forms the basis or inspiration for several other popular libraries, such as Backbone and Spine. More details on underscore.js are here.

Jeff Miccolis will present on the couch-sqlite library for Node.js, which allows a SQLite database to subscribe to changes from CouchDB. For example, this allows you to get real-time updates from Couch into a geo-enabled SQLite database.

July meetup

Grab a six pack and come on over to Development Seed’s garage to talk about Node.js on Monday, July 18. Node.js is awesome, and we hope this meetup will bring together developers working with it (and those who want to be) to talk code, show off their projects, and get to know each other.

We’ll have a series of five minute lightning talks about anything related to Node.js. If you’d like to present, send your topic to @developmentseed or info@developmentseed.org and we’ll add you to the lineup. We’ll have a projector, screen, and internet, and slides and demos are welcome.
